High Visibility Fuel Gauge

High Visibility Fuel Sight Gauge

The following installation information assists in the replacement of a Piper original style fuel sight gauge normally located in the aircrafts wing root interior panels.  Compatibility of this design change with other previously approved modifications must be determined by the installer.

Remove:

Drain all fuel from fuel tanks.
Remove upper and lower wing root fairings.
Loosen fuel line hose clamps on gauge connection fittings.
Remove original fuel gauge assembly from wing root cover panels.

Inspect:

For evidence of fuel leaks to include:  original Piper tank gauge connection tubes, fuel take-off fittings, finger strainers and fuel drain fittings.
Condition of fuel line connecting hoses.
Condition of fuel line clamps.
Replace any system component that shows signs of deterioration or have been improperly installed.

Install:

Install new High Visibility Fuel Gauge assembly thru wing root cover panels.
Check length of connection hoses and reduce length of hose as necessary.  (Due to design characteristics of the new gauge, the AN840 straight style fittings on new gauges are longer than original AN842 90degree fittings.)
Tighten hose clamps and check for adequate clearance to surrounding structure.
Begin re-fueling process and check for fuel leaks at all tank connections.
As fuel is added verify fuel gauge readings.
Install wing root fairings.

Maintenance:

The new High Visibility Fuel Gauges do not require a regular maintenance interval.
If the fuel level visibility is reduced from the use of non-aviation grades of fuel or extended periods of inactivity, the gauge glass internal surface may be cleaned by simply removing the bottom plug and cleaning the glass with av-gas on a Q-tip type cleaner.  Inspect the bottom plug o-ring and replace if necessary with M83248-1-111(MIL-R-83248C).  Lightly lubricate o-ring and plug thread for ease of installation.
