Extended Range Fuel Tank Installation The installation of Dakota Cub Aircraft's 23 gallon fuel tank into ANY of the Piper models listed in the eligibility listing requires the modification of the wing panels to accept the longer tank. The most convenient time for this modification is during the wing recovering process, when the fabric is being replaced. If the tanks are installed into wings that are not being recovered, it is recommended the fabric be removed from the #6 wing rib inboard. The modification required the #1 and #2 leading edge skins be opened up to allow the installation of an additional set of tank straps to support the larger tank. The standard outboard tank wing rib, which has a lid attachment strip on the top capstrip (may be #3 or #4 rib), must be modified to become a tank bay rib. The next wing rib outboard of the #2 drag strut must have the lid attachment strip previously removed, re-riveted giving an attachment point for the new longer lid assembly. Because the rib spacing varies slightly on the various models, the original rib must be moved, or an additional rib must be added. Once the wing modifications are completed, the tank can be installed, and the lid fit to the tank. Complete instructions including an installation drawing come with the kit. An additional 5 gallons fuel per wing is very nice for those longer cross country trips. |
